A cane maker's honest breakdown of what actually separates a $400 handmade cane from a $12 drugstore one — materials, hardware, labor, and when the cheap option is the right call.
On the day you buy them, a $12 cane and a $400 cane both hold your weight just fine. The difference usually shows up about a year and a half later. It rarely happens at a convenient time. The ferrule works loose while you're crossing a wet parking lot. The handle starts to creak. The shaft is just slightly out of true and you can't quite say why it feels off. We build canes by hand for a living, so we're often the ones explaining this to someone after they've already bought the cheaper one and it let them down.
Someone asked us a version of this just last month, standing in the shop holding a machine-turned handle, turning it over like she was trying to feel where the extra cost went. "Why does this cost ten times what the one at the pharmacy costs?" It's a fair question. A lot of that price gap has very little to do with markup.
A pharmacy cane and a handmade one are built for two different jobs, even though they look similar from across a room. The pharmacy cane has one job: get support into someone's hands cheaply, often within the hour. A handmade cane has to do a lot more over a much longer stretch of time. It has to feel right after forty minutes of walking. Survive a winter of road salt and slush. Still be structurally sound six years from now. That longer list of requirements is most of what drives the cost.

The wood itself matters. We tend to use ash, chestnut, or maple, mostly for grain density and how each species responds to steam bending, since a good number of our handles are curved rather than straight. We set aside blanks with hairline cracks or uneven grain even after we've already paid for that piece of wood. That happens more often than people assume. Drugstore canes almost never use solid hardwood. It's usually an aluminum tube, or a laminate wrapped around a cheaper core, because raw material is one of the first places a manufacturer can cut cost.
Then there's the hand-shaping. A handle that's carved and sanded by hand typically goes through five or so passes of grit before any stain or oil goes on, each pass erasing the marks the last one left. A lathe can do something similar faster, and more evenly across a batch, and there's nothing wrong with that on its own. It just can't taper a handle for one specific hand the way thirty minutes with a rasp can. People feel that difference before they think about why.
The hardware inside the cane is where cheaper ones usually fail first. A brass or steel insert threaded into solid wood handles years of daily pressure without much trouble. Most low-cost canes use a plastic sleeve that's friction-fit into place. That works fine for a while, until it doesn't, and it's usually a sudden wobble mid-step rather than any warning beforehand.
Time is probably the single biggest reason for the price difference. Depending on the design, a handmade cane can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days of combined carving, curing, and finishing. The curing stage alone sometimes takes longer than the carving. A cane coming off a production line takes a few minutes, sometimes less. If a manufacturer needs to hit a lower price, labor time is usually the first thing that gets cut.

We're not trying to convince everyone that a handmade cane is worth several hundred dollars. For plenty of situations it just isn't. Someone recovering from ankle surgery who needs support for a month while it heals is better off grabbing an inexpensive aluminum cane from the pharmacy. Same goes for keeping a spare in the car, or buying a first cane just to find out whether daily use is even needed before spending more on something meant to last for years.
The calculation changes once a cane stops being temporary and becomes part of someone's daily routine for years at a time. At that point the extra money isn't really about luxury. It's closer to cost per year of use, comfort over long stretches of walking, and for a fair number of our customers, simply not wanting to carry something around every day that feels disposable.

It isn't markup added for no reason. A handmade cane costs more because a lot more decisions went into it: which piece of wood to keep and which to set aside, how much to taper a particular neck for a particular grip, how many coats a specific plank of ash needed before it stopped soaking up oil unevenly. None of that shows up on a spec sheet. Much of it you wouldn't even notice until the cane's been in use for a year or two.
That's also the part that's hardest to show in a photo and easiest to notice once it's in your hand, which might be why so many of our customers prefer to choose a cane in person, or spend some time with the material before deciding.
